GUIDED WALK FROM THE SANDSTONE QUARRY TO BERN MINSTER

EASY WALK FROM GÜMLIGEN TO BERN — FRIDAY 6TH NOVEMBER 2026

Anyone walking through Bern’s old town will inevitably come across sandstone, as most of the houses and landmarks – such as Bern Minster – are built from this stone. But where does this stone come from, and how was it formed? Our walk provides the answers to these questions.

We set off from Gümligen, from where we hike over the Ostermundigeberg to the quarry in Ostermundigen. After some fascinating insights, we’ll continue towards Bern, past the Paul Klee Centre and Lake Egelsee, to Bern’s old town. As we wander through the narrow streets, we’ll see sandstone façades and gain a new appreciation for this building material. Our walk ends at Bern Minster.

The leisurely walk takes 3 hours. We’ll also have plenty of time for photo stops and a picnic.
